The third largest consumer of filmic substrates, many time associated to non-extruded webs such as paper and alu-foil, this is the area where a simple sheet of plastic become part of a complex and feature-laden component in the packaging business. Even without entering the barrier film sector, these films are generally characterised by superior optical and geometrical features, to enable their usages in fast post-production converting machine such as printers and laminators. Also of interest the production of blown stretch film, where the intrinsic characteristics of a biaxially oriented extrusion makes these films preferred to flat die extruded alternatives. A three layer line is generally the preferred method to produce these films, but downgauging trends and the use of expensive masterbatches are now bringing to the attention the possibilities offered by five layer concepts as well.
