More than one third of the world food production is wasted because of lack of packaging. Furthermore the increasing population and the shifting of people toward the large cities and the growth of a more spending-capable middle class is driving to consuming patterns where the recourse to better form of packaging are absolutely necessary all along the value chain. Film high-tech coextrusion finds here a perfect domain. Extension of product shelf life by mean of oxygen and gas barrier layers for modified atmosphere packaging is running parallel to package conveniences such as easy sealing or peel/reclose features. The use of peculiar resins for retortable products and the general trend toward the production of even thinning gauges places these coextrusion lines at the cutting edge of technology, with 7, 9 and 11 layer equipment.
